some background and values

Shira Anisman is a professional pole dance teacher located in Vancouver BC. They have been practising pole for 6 years and is offering private lessons. As a queer intersectional feminist, they are energized in making the space as welcoming and accessible as possible. Twice a month she teaches Queer Pole at Ava Fitness in New West, as well as other curriculum classes.

With the knowledge that Pole Dance originates from POC sex workers, they try to honour them in my work by educating folks of pole dance roots. In their classes there is no tolerance of SWERFs, TERFs, fatphobia, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, ableism, misogynior, transmisogyny, and other oppressive acts.  As no racism is tolerated, white folks with locs/ dreads are not welcome to book classes.

As a covid-aware person they will wear masks for classes, although it is optional for you to wear a mask. They are able to meet you at whatever level you are at, regularly teaching level one and Art of Spin, and often aerial hoop classes at Ava Fitness. She is now offering private classes, with more information below.

Accessibility

I understand that pole classes might not be accessible to all folks, but I wanted to be upfront about ways that I can make things more accessible:
There are two steps up to the studio in east van, and a number of busses that pass by.

Width of doorways:
The location is scent reduced,
location can be brightly lit in case of seeing impairments,
location can have guide animals
If needed, chairs can be provided for folks who cannot stand for long

What to expect

We can work on a number of things, including learning new pole tricks, (for both beginners and intermediate folks) building choreo, freestyle dancing, spin pole, and working on specific tricks to perfection.

What to bring

Bring clothes you feel comfortable dancing in, a mask, yoga mats are optional, but can be nice for the warmup. Bring water, and if you have pleasers or similar shoes feel free to bring, however not necessary. As you learn more, more skin contact with the pole is ideal so wearing something similar to swimsuit coverage works best. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
